Pallet Racking Systems Key Changes in the AS4084:2012 update

Pallet racking is now to be considered a “system” not a product. It must be designed to suit the application to which it is being used. The key change is that dynamic forces acting on the rack are to be considered as well as static forces acting on the rack. This has all been tested and certified by Monash University for our pallet racking.

• This means that the load signage is only relevant to the design it was made for. If the customer wishes to change the design they should consult with us first (changes in first and second beam level heights etc).

2. The vertical clearance requirements for pallets stored above heights of 6m have been increased from 75mm to 100mm.
• This is aimed at reducing the risk of accidental impact with beam during pallet put-away and retrieval.

3. The “flue space” between pallets backing onto each other has been increased to 100mm, reducing the risk of an adjacent pallet being accidentally dislodged when storing or retrieving pallets.
• This increase in flue space also better accommodates the needs of insurance companies who often insist on a minimum flue space of 75mm to allow adequate penetration of water from roof and rack-mounted sprinklers during a fire.
• This means that when using standard Australian 1165mm x 1165mm square pallets (such as Chep and Loscam) the 430mm row tie is to be used. If Euro-pallets; Oversized pallets; or mesh decks with loose stock are being used then allowance must be given to ensure that 100mm flue space is maintained.

4. A minimum of two ground anchors must be used per baseplate on racks where forklifts are used.
• The ground anchor is the M12x75mm dynabolt when in a suitable concrete floor. If not on a concrete floor (eg mine site road base or bitumen) then sufficient site preparation work must be done (eg. concrete footings or steel U-channel).

5. Minor changes to rack load signage whereby the dimension from ground to first beam level and from first to second beam level MUST be explicitly noted on signage
• This means we now must use the Load Sign 2012.
• It must be mechanically attached 2m above the ground.
• Font must be at least 25mm high. This equates to a 72pt font.
• It must be filled out completely including the design number (provided by Monash University)

6. Rack protection now has a minimum requirement. 400mm Corner Guards must be placed on the intersection of each gangway and cross-aisle. See diagram attached. All other rack protection is at the discretion of the end-user however is recommended.

7. In general splices are to be avoided. If they are used then Splices MUST NOT be below the first level, MUST NOT be below 1.5m above ground level and NO MORE than one (1) splice between any adjacent beam level.
